How to Use Regex in Search Console

Writing a Search Console regex by hand for 80 queries means one missed escape and a filter that silently matches nothing. Paste the list and get a regex that works first time.

How it works What the regex builder does

Turns your list into a regular expression for the Search Console query or page filter, escaping special characters. Splits into several regexes if one would pass the 4,096-character limit.

Google Search Console lets you filter the Performance report by a regular expression, but typing one by hand for more than a handful of queries is slow and error-prone. This operation takes your list, escapes every character that means something in regex (brackets, dots, plus signs, question marks) and joins the lines with | so the filter matches any of them.

Choose whether each line should match anywhere in the query, match the whole query exactly, or match the start of the query. Case-insensitive matching adds (?i) at the front. Search Console rejects filters longer than 4,096 characters, so a long list is split into several regexes, each safely under the limit, which you can paste one at a time.

3 steps How to use the regex builder

  1. Paste your list into the box above β€” one item per line. Keyword exports, crawl exports and spreadsheet columns all work.
  2. Check the settings and adjust them to your job β€” the result updates as you type.
  3. Copy the result and paste it wherever it needs to go. Nothing is uploaded, so client and confidential data stay on your machine.

Use it to When to use the regex builder

  • Filter Search Console to the exact queries in a keyword cluster before checking clicks and CTR
  • Build a page filter that matches a list of URLs from a content audit
  • Isolate brand queries (or exclude them with β€œDoesn’t match regex”) using a list of brand spellings

FAQ Regex builder questions

Is Build Search Console Regex free to use?

Yes. Build Search Console Regex runs entirely in your browser, on this page and in the full Notepad, with no sign-up, no limits, and nothing sent to a server.

Why did I get more than one regex?

Search Console only accepts 4,096 characters per filter. When your list is longer, the output is split into several regexes that each fit, so run the report once per regex.

Does it work in Looker Studio or GA4?

Yes. The output is standard RE2 syntax, which Looker Studio and GA4 also use, so the same regex works in their filters.
